I was checking out my site traffic and statistics from the last month and was pretty surprised to find that Chrome is already at 4.26% of my traffic (its currently my primary browser while I patiently wait for my Google neural implant). That and Firefox surpasses IE? I was under the impression IE had an insane market share. Although Ive been a little discontent about Windows Mobile development lately, I have nothing but good things to say about Microsoft software products in general. They have the best offerings in desktop and server operating systems, best office productivity applications, infrastructure services, and by far the best development tools.

Conversely, Google provides the best of everything in the way of web related services: maps, email, hosting, browser, blogging, etc.

Around a year or so ago, I decided to (re)purchase koushikdutta.com. I wasnt really sure what I was going to do with it at the time. I just figured that my domain name should probably belong to me. Id heard some good things about Google Apps hosting services, and decided to try it out. The whole ordeal cost me 10 bucks, so it was a no brainer really.

It took me a few weeks of learning and tinkering to get my infrastructure setup perfect, but I ended up with an infrastructure that Im very happy with:

• It can resolve home.koushikdutta.com to a dynamic IP so I can reach my computer from anywhere.
• Blogger is set up to host my blog on www.koushikdutta.com.
• All my mail is mirrored between an internal Exchange server and my account Gmail hosted by Google Apps (@koushikdutta.com).
• ActiveSync and Gmail push to both my Windows Mobile and Android phones.
• VPN into my home network from anywhere.

Hosting a top level Domain from a Dynamic IP

When your router connects to your ISP, it gets a "lease" on an IP. That lease generally expires after a few days, at which point, you may get a different IP. This is called a "dynamic IP". And since the IP is changing fairly regularly, you normally cant associate a domain to it.

For those not in on this little secret, there is a free service called DynDNS that allows you to map a dynamic IP to one of DynDNSs subdomains. With the DynDNS Update Client, your computer can watch for IP changes and report them to DynDNS. DynDNS will then update the IP address of your domain name.

In my case, my router actually supports the DynDNS Service:

As you can see, my home network is can be resolved from the internet via clockwork.dyndns.org. So now I have a CNAME that is hooked to a shifty IP. The next step is to have my domain, koushikdutta.com, resolve to clockwork.dyndns.org. By going into the Advanced DNS settings for my Google hosted domain (which is backed by www.enom.com), I set a couple subdomains of koushikdutta.com to resolve to my DynDNS subdomain:

As you can see, home.koushikdutta.com, mail.koushikdutta.com and clockworks.koushikdutta.com all point to my DynDNS address, which in turn points to my home network.

Remote Desktop is indisposable for me nowadays. Couple that with DynDNS, and I can access my computer remotely from anywhere.

Pointing a Domain hosted by Google to a Blog hosted by Blogger

I did not have www.koushikdutta.com or koushikdutta.com resolve to my home IP, because I want them to go to my blog hosted by Blogger. If your domain was purchased through Google Apps, setting it up to play nicely with Blogger is really simple. Just go to your Blogger account settings and click on the Publishing tab to publish to a custom domain:

Gmail and Exchange Integration

Gmail is a pretty fantastic email hosting service. Not really because of the web client, storage space, or any of the other random features. Its great because the spam filter actually works:

Admittedly, Hotmail isnt that bad either. But for some reason Microsoft decided that standard offerings from other services like IMAP and POP3 access should only be available to people with a Premium Membership.

My goal in this part of the project was a little nonstandard: I wanted to access the same mail via the Gmail interface and also have that email synchronized to my Exchange server. Gmail would provide a 99.9% reliable delivery destination and a trusted SMTP server for handshaking so my emails dont get caught in a spam filters. And Exchange would give me the nicety of being able to access my email through Outlook as well as ActiveSync for my Windows Mobile phones.

So, I first set up Google Apps to provide Gmail service for koushikdutta.com and added the mail accounts:

With that I would have a working Gmail account at koushikdutta.com. Next step was to set up my Exchange server account to accept mail to a couple different addresses:

Notice that I have an email@clockwork.dyndns.org in that list. This email address alias provides the means of mirroring the Gmail and Exchange accounts. My Gmail account redirects all my mail to this alias:

Note that this is actually doing a redirect, and not a forward. So when my Exchange server receives it, it thinks that it received an email for email@koushikdutta.com and not email@clockwork.dyndns.org.

The last step is to set up my Exchange server to use Gmails SMTP servers. This can be done by setting up an Exchange Send Connector that routes mail through a Smart Host (smtp.gmail.com):

I could forego this step, but then my mails may end bouncing due to it coming from a unauthenticated source (my personal computer), thus ending up in a Junk Mail folder. And since it is sent through Gmails SMTP server, the sent emails will also show up in your Sent folder in that account. (Note: Emails sent through the Gmail interface will NOT show up in the Exchange sent items)

Finally, I forwarded my @gmail.com and @hotmail.com mails to @koushikdutta.com. The end result looks something like this:

I get push email from any account to both my phones!

VMs, Data Backup, et al.

This isnt really related to this article, but server setup and management is so trivial with Microsoft products. Hate to sound like a zealot, but its true. Currently, I have one physical machine that hosts 2 Domain Controllers, 1 Exchange Server, and 1 Team Foundation Server (for source control).

My biggest concern with this setup was "What happens if my VM host machine dies?". Theres no need for SQL replication or some other process that would only back up your data. For this, there is a quick and easy solution. Just mirror the entire disk that hosts the VMs. So if your VM host or any one hard drive crashes, no data is lost, including the state of the machines hosting the services:

Incidentally, my VM host did explode/die a few months ago. It took me around 1 hour to go buy replacement parts from Frys. And it took me around 10 minutes to transfer the VMs to the new computer I built.

Yeah, so its been well over 30 Days as I originally predicted, so Im renaming this series 30 Posts of Bitching about .NET Compact Framework.

Windows Mobile "Standard" [0] device development is a pain. Ive never owned one, because I cant really live without a touch screen.

I still fondly remember many years ago, when I first fired up the Visual Studio Form designer with the Smartphone form factor. I started started dragging my controls out, doing the usual, then I noticed something odd: I didnt have a Button control on my toolbox. I searched around for a bit, and assumed that my Visual Studio installation was hosed. I created a new Pocket PC project, and the Button control was there. So I dragged one out, and then changed the target platform to Smartphone. I reopened the form and saw this intimidating hazard sign:

Attempting to run the application resulted in a NotSupported exception. Apparently simple Button controls arent supported on Windows Mobile Standard for whatever reason. I guess this is because there is no touch screen, and thus no mouse clicks, so they just dropped support for the Button control and left the developer with LinkLabels. That really brings application development to a grinding halt if you are trying to target both Smartphone and Pocket PC. [1]

Man, Ive really strayed from the point of this article. Getting back on track: The purpose of this post is to discuss something I mentioned briefly in a previous post. One of the annoying issues associated with Smartphone development is that since you are restricted to only keyboard input, your application has to be very aware of key navigation. The user should be able to intuitively navigate through all the forms quickly and easily. However, from an API level, all the developer is given is TabIndex. TabIndex is a property that you can set on any control that let the Windows API know the tab order of controls. For example, the Up button on a Smartphone would take you back to the control with the previous TabIndex, while the Down button would take you to the next TabIndex.

All is well in the world of TabIndex and simple 5 minute applications. TabIndex works great if all your controls are laid out vertically, with one control per line. But if you need to do any real Windows Mobile application development, chances are that TabIndex will not cut it. Take for example the following Form:

For visual reference, the yellow region is a panel housing 4 LinkLabels, and the white region is the Form housing the other 6. The TabIndex of each Link is shown.

Navigating through this form is gross. For one, the Left and Right keys dont actually navigate left or right to other Controls. And the Up and Down Keys simply go through the Controls in TabIndex order. So, if "Panel TabIndex 0" had focus, pressing up would take you to "Form TabIndex 5" and not "Form TabIndex 2". Conversely, if "Form TabIndex 2" had focus, pressing down would take you to "Form TabIndex 3" and not "Panel TabIndex 0".

Basically, once you introduce any sort of grid or panels, TabIndex probably will not work for you. At that point, you need to hook the KeyDown events and handle the navigation to and from each Control... manually... for every Form. And as development progesses, and the UI changes, you better make sure that you update all those nasty KeyDown event hooks so your navigation doesnt break!

This is not ideal; it introduces code bloat, bugs, and is in general just tedious to do. To that end, I wrote an algorithm that would analyze the Controls in a Form and figure out the best Navigation target from any given Control (if there was one).

Im not going to really get into the algorithm in great detail. Basically the way it works is that it looks at the key that was pressed and finds the corresponding edge of the Control. It uses that edge to find the opposite edge of all the other controls that has the best "score". A score is comprised of 2 factors: how close are the edges to each other and how much of the edge is "shared". Yeah, that probably made no sense. Maybe this picture will help:

So, yeah, Edge Distance and Shared Edge Length are the two weighting factors in determining the best navigation target.

This navigation code is actually a small part of the overall UI framework I use. Ive stripped out the algorithm and repackaged it so that it can be used by anyone. Usage is pretty straightforward. The Navigation class has two members:

• FindFocusedControl - Find the control on the Form that is currently focused.
• GetBestNavigationTarget - Given a Control and a navigation Key (Up, Down, Left, or Right), find the best navigation target.

To catch navigation events easily, you can do it at a form level by enabling KeyPreview. Then override OnKeyDown and use those two methods to find the Control that should receive focus. For example, heres the code from the sample:

Heres the full source code to the navigation algorithm and the sample demonstrating how to use it. The sample application is the same one you see in the above image with 10 LinkLabels. By default, Smart Navigation is disabled, use the arrow keys to navigate around the form using TabIndex. Then enable Smart Navigation in the Menu and use the arrow keys to navigate intuitively.

The sample is just a demonstration of the navigation; keep in mind that some Controls may want to handle certain key presses. For example, text boxes should generally receive the left and right key presses to navigate within the entered text and not to another Control.

To repair such devices, you should perform the next steps:

I. If device eMMC is not damaged
Solder the necessary eMMC wires
Connect the device
Go to «Factory Repair» tab in the Software
Press «Repair devices based on MediaTek CPUs using scatter» button
Select proper scatter and necessary files
Press «Write partitions» button
Device repair is done
II. If device eMMC is damaged

If eMMC chip is damaged, you can replace it to similar Samsung eMMC chip.
You should have CID and know properties (Boot1, Boot2, RPMB partitions’ sizes) of eMMC, which you want to replace.

Connect Samsung eMMC to Box (via soldering eMMC wires or via eMMC adapter)
Press «eMMC geometry edit» button, enter necessary Boot1, Boot2, RPMB partitions’ sizes and set them
Write proper CID of eMMC, which you want to replace
Go to «Factory Repair» tab in the Software
Press «Repair devices based on MediaTek CPUs using scatter» button
Select proper scatter and necessary files
Press «Write partitions» button
After writing will be complete, replace device’s eMMC chip to programmed Samsung eMMC
Assemble the device and power it on. Device repair is done

Instructions:

1. Turn on your phones WiFi. This gives your phone an IP you can reach it at freely.
2. Get to a command prompt on your device by using the PTerminal application from the Android Market. (adb shell does not seem to work with these instructions, telnetd does not start up)
3. cd system
4. cd bin
5. telnetd
6. netstat (get your phones IP)
7. telnet into your phone from your computer

You now have root! I verified this by remounting the /system partition as read/write and changing files around:

mount -oremount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

That remounts the /system directory as read/write instead of read only. This can only be done as root.

WARNING:

As I suspected, changes to the /system directory can not be reverted by a hard reset; the /system directory is actually a YAFFS2 file system (system.img) that is supposed to be read only, and thus is not part of the recovery image. Dont play with it unless you know what you are doing. I moved some files around in /system and broke my Browser, so I performed a hard reset, but the Browser was still broken after a hard reset. Luckily I had tracked my changes and was able to revert what I had done manually.

Notes:

• Incidentally, in the /system/bin directory there is a flash_image executable that changes the recovery.img used when you hard reset the device. Ive noticed that I can run this without root access from a standard adb shell. Maybe we never needed to root the device after all... I think we can flash it without root access... Im too scared to mess with that beyond that (I dont want to brick my phone!).
• There is no cp command, so you must use the dd command. To get a file from your computer to your phone, copy it to the SD card, and then use the root shell to copy it from the SD card to wherever you need.
• Ive noticed that you must start up telnetd very quickly upon starting pterminal. If you wait too long, telnetd will not stay resident; it exits immediately. It looks as if there is some timing and security related issue here. Ive also written a quick telnet client so I can set telnet into root on my phone, from my phone. This works fine. However, I have not been able to successfully launch telnetd from my own application (using Runtime.exec). Im not sure what pTerminal is doing differently here.
• Kudos to SplasPood of Xda-developers for noticing this exploit.
