AT T Selling Gigabit Services to More than 3 Million Locations Will Exceed 12 5 Million Locations by 2019
AT T Selling Gigabit Services to More than 3 Million Locations Will Exceed 12 5 Million Locations by 2019
With the caveat that a passing (customer location that can buy a service) is not an account, AT&T says its gigabit services now are available in parts of 32 major metro areas, with plans to reach at least 45 metros by the end of 2016 and 67 markets overall.
AT&T says it is marketing service to over three million locations, of which over 500,000 include apartment and condo units. AT&T also says it is on track to exceed the 12.5 million locations planned by mid-2019.

DirecTV Might Help AT T Connect MDUs Out of Region
DirecTV Might Help AT T Connect MDUs Out of Region
Most multi-product businesses earn disparate amounts of revenue--and profit--from each discrete product line. In a perhaps-ideal scenario, a mix of young and fast-growing next product cycle products as well as mature, cash-producing lines of business contribute to overall earnings, profits and strategy.
Telecom companies are no different, featuring a mix of products, customer segments and growth profiles. And, frequently, profits and revenues from one part of the business are used to subsidize the operation or growth of other segments.
So it is that AT&Ts DirecTV operations might help AT&T grow its Internet access services outside its historic fixed network footprint.
The reason: AT&T plans to serve customers living in apartment complexes outside of its fixed network service area, operating as a competitive local exchange carrier, and offering 100 Mbps Internet access, perhaps using millimeter wave spectrum and fixed wireless.
Obviously, roof rights are required, and many apartment complexes might already have business deals with DirecTV that AT&T can leverage to supply high speed Internet access as well, using fixed wireless to reach some buildings.
The strategy apparently is to use a hub-and-spoke network where a central building is connected directly using optical fiber, while nearby buildings are connected using fixed wireless.

Ericsson Not at the Beginning of the End CEO Insists
Ericsson Not at the Beginning of the End CEO Insists
You can draw your own conclusions about Ericsson CEO Jan Frykhammar saying this is absolutely not the beginning of the end for Ericsson. Those remarks came in the context of a warning that business result for the third quarter 2016 will be significantly lower than company expectations.
In the first half of 2016, with demand for mobile broadband products has been negative. Sales declined by 14 percent year over year, while gross profit margin declined 34 percent.
Ericsson said business result for the third quarter 2016 will be significantly lower than company expectations, driven by macro-economic toughness in some markets, as well as completion of some mobile network upgrades in Europe.
Ericsson did not specifically mention competition from either Huawei or Nokia Networks, but many will say that also is part of the problem.

A close look at survey methodology for proof of acquired distinctiveness
A close look at survey methodology for proof of acquired distinctiveness
The grounds for the German Federal Court of Justices decision in the Sparkassen Group/Banco Santander dispute over the validity of Sparkassens colour mark "red" (HSK 13) for financial services, namely retail banking, have been published last week. The 46-page judgment takes a very close look at the proper methodology of consumer surveys designed to prove acquired distinctiveness. Since no less than four surveys were submitted by the parties, two by each side, the Court had a wealth of material to work with.

Have you ever seen this colour in connection with financial institutions, or does it appear familiar in this context? Or have you never encountered this colour in connection with financial institutions?According to the BGH, this question was suggestive, as it already created a link to a certain kind of companies, namely financial institutions. It already introduced the key question - whether the sign was understood as reference to a single entity - into the first question, which should only filter for persons that have never encountered the sign (para. 43). The proper way was to ask whether the respondents had seen the colour in connection with the claimed products.

| Too much paper... |
Another flaw of the Pflüger survey - which equally applies to the IPSOS survey - was that the first question asked "Have you ever seen this colour in connection with financial services [as listed] or does it appear familiar in this context? Or have you never encountered this colour in this context?" According to the Court, the part of the question here put in italics is impermissible, as it leads respondents to consider a third answer, other than yes or no, to the question. It was fine to count those who spontaneously answered that the colour appeared familiar among those who know the sign, but "looks familiar" must not be an explicit option, as it leads to inflated figures (para. 72. In the case at hand, only about 17% of respondents spontaneously answer that the colour seems familiar, but 24% if explicitly given the option).
In connection with financial services...
- the colour refers to ("hinweisen") a specific financial institution (63%)
- the colour refers to several financial institutions (8%)
- the colour does not refer to any financial institution (4%)
- cannot answer (6%)
This question was appropriate (para. 79). 62% of respondents named a company of the trade mark owners group in answer to the third question "Do you know the name of this financial instution?".
