I'm using my personal e-mail address as my apple id for purchases (mostly free stuff) on app stores before icloud came along. with icloud, now i've a icloud.com email account for icloud services.. I had to reset my apple id. i have checked the new id on apple and icloud websites and it appears to be working. problem is when i try to sign in via settings page the verification using the same password does not work.. Key difference: the apple id and icloud id are accounts from apple inc.the apple id is used to log into the icloud. in both the accounts, only apple users can log in. the apple account and icloud account are two different accounts but can be accessed with the same e-mail id..
An icloud account, itunes account and apple id are all the same thing. apple just refers to them a bit inconsistently. you can (and typically should) have a single apple id for all of them, unless you specifically need to separate them out.. It's a same thing but for different purpose. apple id is your id for your apple product. such to buy apps, manage devices, etc. icloud id is your apple id but specifically to manage your cloud storage, and for some reasons to manage the safety of your data and devices..
